As part of its mandate, the OBC rules make sure septic tanks are designed and installed in the right way. So that it prevents soil and groundwater contamination and protects the environment. For example, according to OCB PART 8 you have to develop a septic tank that can hold sanitary sewage to a minimum depth of 1,000 mm (or 900 mm if the excavation is in rock).

Our licensed and professional septic engineers follow each and every Ontario Building code regulation while designing the septic system for your property. Ensure minimum requirements before building any Septic plan

As an important part of the wastewater treatment system, septic tanks are essential to protect the public’s health. A septic tank’s minimum capacity must be 3,600 L or more. Residential occupancies: 2x daily design sewage flow; Non-residential occupancies: 3x daily design sewage flow. Further, the daily sewage flow needs to be three times as high for non-residential occupancy. For septic design, GTA area:

Sanitary sewage will flow through at least two compartments in the tank.

For two tanks, the pipe between their outlets shall have at least a 2-per cent slope. Each tank’s outlet and inlet pipe must have a minimum slope of two percent

There must be at least 150 mm of separation between compartments in the septic tank.

To ensure proper maintenance and inspection, septic tanks must be located sufficiently away from property lines. Water sources such as streams, lakes, and wells must be kept away from septic tanks. It is crucial that proper ventilation and preventative measures be taken when septic tanks are close to buildings. Besides, to avoid interference or damage, septic tanks must be located at a safe distance from underground utilities. Whether you are looking for permission for septic design Burlington or septic design Barrie our professionals can help.

The approval process for septic systems regulated under the Ontario Building Code is typically handled by the local municipality’s Building Department, Conservation Authority, or Health Unit. This includes plan review, permit issuance, and inspections. If you are uncertain about the approval authority in your area, you can reach out to the Municipal Building Department for guidance. You can also contact us to provide proper guidelines. We can help you to build the septic plan and ensure it gets permitted by the authority.

Meet your flawless septic system design needs

The type of septic system needed depends on several factors such as the size of the property, the soil type, and the amount of wastewater generated. Generally, the most common type of septic system in Ontario is a conventional gravity-fed system. It consists of a septic tank and a drain field. However, alternative systems such as mound systems, sand filters, and pressurized systems may be necessary under some circumstances. It is important to consult with a licensed septic installer and a local health department to determine the appropriate type of septic system for your property.

A septic system should not contain sludge, scum, or solids in its leaching bed (tile bed). At least once every two years, the septic tank needs to be inspected and pumped out. The most current information regarding minimum clearance requirements for septic design Ajax or septic design Whitby , we maintain the latest edition of the OBC regulation.

Wide range of Septic System design According to your Property requirements

There are several types of septic systems available for the treatment and disposal of wastewater. We always provide our residents with incorporated designs that are both affordable and of the highest quality. Some of the most common types include:

Conventional Septic Systems

The typical septic systems include a septic tank and a drain field for treating and dispersing wastewater. The majority of their applications are for residential and small commercial.

Most common type, also,

Used where the natural soils are suitable filter materials and the ground includes a good infiltration rate

Uses Leaching bed pipes in stone-filled trenches below normal ground level

Raised bed:

second most common type

it uses where natural soils are not suitable filter materials, or the site has a high water table, or bedrock is close to the surface

appropriate soil is brought in to the site to create a leaching bed that is high enough above the underground water table or bedrock pipes install in stone filled trenches in the imported soils

requires a large extra area of appropriate soils “downstream” from the bed (in the direction the waste water will flow as it seeps through the soil); called the “mantle”, this is an important part of the soil filter

Filter bed:

Sand filters are similar to conventional systems, but use a layer of sand to filter and treat wastewater before dispersing it into the ground. Areas with high water tables or poorly drained soils commonly use them.

Site conditions or lot size may require a smaller bed area, making it applicable, also,

instead of trenches, the whole excavated bed area filled with a layer of “filter” sand which must meet specific requirements for grain size

They will place a layer of stone on top of the sand and lay pipes into it, additionally,

Pipes will install closer together, furthermore,

It can install in-ground, partially raised or fully raised, besides,

may also use a mantle .

Shallow buried trenches:

used where you need to install the septic system with a smaller bed area

The system pumps filtered wastewater through perforated pipes under pressure. The pipes spray the water evenly over trenches in specially designed chambers.

requires additional maintenance, plus annual inspection and testing

Advanced Tertiary Treatment Systems in Ontario

Advanced treatment units must meet the effluent standards set out in Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code. Units listed in SB-5 of the Code are deemed to meet these requirements.

Advanced treatment units that produce tertiary quality effluent could be used with the shallow buried trench system which is regulated under the Ontario Building Code or with an area bed pursuant to an authorization issued by the Building Materials Evaluation Commission (BMEC).

The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing website at www.ontario.ca/buildingcode lists the authorizations issued by the BMEC

ATUs are specialized systems that use air to accelerate the treatment of wastewater. They are typically used in areas where conventional systems are not feasible or where higher water quality standards are required.

A few samples of Advanced Tertiary Treatment Systems:

Eljen GSF Septic System

This septic system is a two-part sewage treatment and dispersal system buried in the ground. It includes a septic tank with an effluent filter, a treatment/dispersal system, and may have pumps and other components depending on your location and system demands. The sewage generally flows by gravity: first, into the septic tank where larger particles settle out and some primary decomposition takes place, and then into the Eljen GSF System where it decomposes before slowly soaking/dispersing into the soil.

All Eljen GSF Systems will install on a layer of clean, medium to coarse Specified Sand. The effluent flows into the GSF Modules through perforated plastic pipes which are secured to the tops of the Modules. An anti-siltation fabric covers the GSF Modules and distribution pipe assembly. This fabric prevents backfill soil materials from entering the GSF Modules.

All Eljen GSF System designs are to be in accordance with the BMEC Authorization, the Ontario Building Code, and the Eljen Design and Installation Manual.

Waterloo Biofilter

Waterloo Biofilters are sustainable septic systems that provide a permanent combination of biological treatment and physical filtration of wastewater.  The system uses an engineered filter medium that is highly resistant to clogging, has the highest surface area-to-volume ratio in the industry, and they warranty to last at least 20 years!

The System designed to work in even the most difficult sites, Waterloo Biofilters are the ideal solution for clay soils, bedrock, high water table, small lots, remote sites, and environmentally sensitive areas.  A Waterloo Biofilter works like a low-pressure membrane, providing a physical barrier that wastewater must pass through for treatment before entering the environment.  Even when the power supply not working, the Waterloo Biofilter’s design ensures no untreated sewage enters the environment.

Enviro-Septic

The Enviro-Septic wastewater treatment System treats septic tank effluent in a manner that prevents suspended solids from clogging the underlying soil, increases system aeration, and provides a greater bacterial area than traditional leaching systems.

Greywater Systems

Greywater systems are designed to separate and treat greywater (wastewater from sinks, showers, and washing machines) separately from blackwater (wastewater from toilets). As a sustainable alternative to traditional septic systems, they are becoming increasingly popular.

Our expert professionals know that a septic system that is suitable for a particular property will depend on a variety of factors, including site conditions, local regulations, and the specific needs of the property. Additionally, our professional septic tank design services can assist in determining the best septic system for a particular property.
